“You’re My Dawg, Dog” by Donald Friedman, Illustrated by J.C. Suarès (Welcome Books)

(PRWEB) February 26, 2013

“You’re My Dawg, Dog: A Lexicon of Dog Terms for People” written by award-winning author Donald Friedman and illustrated by New York Times Op-Ed creator and designer, J.C. Suarès, one can find 146 dog terms, idioms, proverbs and metaphors explained for people, with the help of over 64 delightfully illustrated dogs. On a single page dog lovers and logophiles will find quotes from Shakespeare, Rihanna, pre-Socratic philosophers, Black Sabbath and the NASDAQ.

“You’re My Dawg, Dog” gives us enlightening etymologies and vivid examples of familiar phrases like “dog days”, “dogfight”, “dogfish”, and the “dog collar” worn by clergymen. Colorful dog terms are defined, like “black dog” which was Churchill’s nickname for his bouts of depression, “tough dog to keep on the porch”— Hillary’s descriptive for Bill, and “doggie style”, which the author drily explains is not “Vogue for Airedales and Cocker Spaniels.”

Below Donald Friedman picks 13 favorite dog terms from his book. Pick up “You’re My Dawg, Dog” for these and 133 more funny and fascinating definitions.

1. Hot dog (n) A precooked sausage, a frankfurter or wiener, usually served on a bun and de rigueur cuisine at a baseball game. From the early accusation that dog was the primary constituent of the emulsified meat that is stuffed in the casing. 2. (adj) Someone who performs daredevil stunts or shows off. “Herb, ever the hot dog at chess, loved to offer his queen in sacrifice.” Sometimes used pejoratively to describe a self-aggrandizing or non-team player. 3. An exclamation of pleasure; also “hot diggity dog” With the exception of Pat Boone and maybe Sarah Palin, last known public use was in 1958.

2. Dogfight (n) A no-holds-barred brawl. “When Herb found Josiah with his fiancée Sally at the party, it turned into a scene out of Amores Perros—the two of them on the floor, Herb biting Josiah’s ear like he was Mike Tyson.” 2. One-on-one aerial combat. Two famous dogfighting aces from World War I were Eddie Rickenbacker and Baron Manfred von Richthofen. Battles with the latter were famously parodied by Charles Schulz with the legendary Snoopy fighting from the roof of his Sopwith Camel doghouse.

3. Dog-eared (adj) Turned down or bent over, especially the corners of pages. “Sally gave Herb her copy of Ulysses and, given that he’d never seen her read anything more challenging than Cosmo, he was dumbstruck when he opened it and found it dog-eared, underlined, and filled with her marginalia.” 2. Worn out, shabby from overuse. “We’ve been listening to the same dog-eared rhetoric from the same dog-eared senator for forty years now.”

4. Black dog depression (n) The phrase seems to conjoin a dark mood with being dogged or unshakably followed. Commonly associated with Winston Churchill, who often referred to the depressive side of his bipolar disorder as his “black dog.” The usage has been around for centuries: in the Middle Ages, melancholia was one of the less positive traits the dog represented. “When Sally told Josiah she couldn’t face the day, that she’d gotten up with a black dog in her bed, he asked whether it was better or worse than his daily awakening with an elephant’s foot on his chest.”

5. Horn dog (n) Someone who thinks about sex all the time and may, as a consequence, become a “tough dog to keep on the porch.”

6. Dog collar (n) A stiff upright collar, especially the reverse collar worn by a clergyman. “Herb could not come to grips with his unfrocking, and for a year afterward continued to wear his dog collar and bask in the deference it inspired in the people he met.”

7. Big dog (n) The boss, an important personage, or the most competitive in a field. 2. The constellation Canis Major. 3. The Boston Dynamics Big Dog robot, which looks and sounds like a giant mutated insect, can carry several hundred pounds for hours over any kind of terrain without losing its balance even when violently kicked from the side or traversing black ice, and without complaint. See it on YouTube.

8. Dog days (n) For the Greeks, the rising of Sirius, the dog star, signaled the start of the hot and weakening days of summer, which became known as the dog days. The Greeks offered sacrifices to Sirius to cajole cool breezes. The Romans called the wiltingly hot days “dies caniculares.” The French call the scorching August weather “la canicule.” This idea—as well as “every dog has its day”—is alluded to in the title of the Sidney Lumet film Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino. “Dog days” has also found new meaning among stock traders who’ve found August slow for stocks as well as people.

9. Tail wagging the dog A situation in which a minor item comes to dominate the major, or in which attention is fixed on incidental problems to the detriment of more central ones. If the intention is to divert attention from important matters to unimportant ones, the method is to “wag the dog.” In the 1997 Barry Levinson film of that name, the electorate is distracted from a White House sex scandal by creating a fictive war. S.J. Perelman once wrote humorously of his escape from the attention of some prostitutes: “It was a case of the tail dogging the wag.”

10. Underdog (n) The person, group, or entity expected to lose a competition or a political race. Election night, 1948, Truman was so much the underdog that the Chicago Tribune confidently headlined Dewey as victor even before the results were in.

11. Love me, love my dog A metaphoric way of saying that a person must be accepted along with those people and things close to or attached to her; by extension, to be accepted with one’s foibles and weaknesses. Back in the 12th century, St. Bernard (appropriately enough) is claimed to have quoted the proverb in Latin: “Qui me amat, amet et canem meum” (literally, “Who loves me, loves my dog, as well”), although why he did that is unclear. “Sally’s friends were disgusted with Herb’s drunkenness and discouraged Sally from bringing him around, until she called them on it and declared, ‘Love me, love my dog.’”

12. Three-dog night (n) A cold night—i.e., one requiring three dogs to keep you warm. Also the American rock group that sang of their friend Jeremiah the bullfrog and wished joy to the world.

13. Lucky dog (n) A very fortunate person, sometimes used to imply undeservedly so. “Herb, that lucky dog, won the lottery the same week his company Amalgamated. •

Roach Energy Gives Generous Donation to Non-Profit Organization

Roach Energy Gives Generous Donation to Non-Profit Organization

Martinsburg, WV (PRWEB) February 24, 2013

Roach Energy recently signed on to Hospice of the Panhandle’s ‘Building the Dream’ campaign, offering a $ 5,000 gift to the agency in the non-profit’s quest to build a 14-bed inpatient unit and to consolidate offices.

The gift follows one made by Rocs employees in 2010, who donated more than $ 3,300 to the campaign as a result of selling the winning Powerball ticket to former Berkeley County Magistrate and Sheriff Randy Smith. When a store sells a winning lottery ticket, it receives a percentage of proceeds from the West Virginia Lottery Commission. In this instance, Roach Energy’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Roach, gave employees the opportunity to make a gift to the charity of their choice.

“Roach Energy has always been committed to supporting the community,” Roach said. “We have witnessed the hard work that many non-profits perform on a daily basis. Our community would not exist without them. Roach Energy’s desire to give back goes back generations – it’s just something we have always done and will continue to do.”

West Virginia’s top energy supplier, Roach Energy, supports many non-profits in the community in addition to Hospice – the Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic, Shenandoah Area Council of Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Club and the Rotary Foundation, to name a few. The company recently was the lead sponsor in the noontime Rotary Club’s fundraiser, “Taste of the Panhandle,” which supports several non-profits in the area.

“Roach Energy really sets the standard as a business which has always been willing to give back,” said Hospice Board chair and campaign chair GT Schramm. “We were so pleased with their gift and support. The fact that they immediately thought of giving away the store’s lottery proceeds – and asking employees to choose their favorite charity – just speaks volumes to how they feel about the non-profit community.”

More than 350 individuals and area businesses have made donations to Hospice’s Building the Dream campaign. To date, more than $ 3.5 million has been raised. Construction at the 19-acre site, situated on the Berkeley-Jefferson County border, continues. Roadwork and excavation is completed and building contractors are expected to get on the scene in early February.

Hospice staff expects to occupy the new facilities during the first quarter of 2014.

“We at Hospice applaud that Roach Energy is willing to help so many do so much good,” said CEO Margaret Cogswell.

For more information, contact Roach Energy marketing and promotions manager Bethany Allen-Perez at (304) 262-5067.

Commuter Bike Manufacturer Linus Bike Applauds Petition for Cycle Awareness

Commuter Bike Manufacturer Linus Bike Applauds Petition for Cycle Awareness

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) February 13, 2013

On February 13, 2013, Linus Bike, a commuter bike manufacturer, offered its support for a petition proposed by Kibworth, England local Mike Higgins to include cycle awareness as part of the driving exam.

In a recent report from Harborough Mail, Mike Higgins, a cyclist from Kibworth, created a petition to include cycle awareness as part of the driving exam. The article states that Higgins believes that knowledge regarding cyclists on the roads must be improved and that the best way to remedy it is to begin training drivers on cyclist awareness.

The article reports that within less than a week Higgins has gathered over 5,500 signatures. In addition, the petition is being supported by cycling legend Chris Boardman and British Cycling.

“I’m not trying to say all cyclists are good and all drivers bad. I do feel that it is a lottery at the moment. Some people know how to overtake, some don’t,” Higgins states in the article.

According to the article, the death of a Kibworth man named Adam Bennett has partly prompted the petition. Bennett passed away in November following a collision on Bruntingthorpe Road. “This year UK drivers have knocked too many people off bikes including Bradley Wiggins,” Higgins explains.

“With London 2012 and Wiggo’s win at the Tour De France, more people will be on the road, so awareness will be more important.” Higgins continues, “The other day it just hit me that perhaps people just need to be trained in how and when to overtake. They do it for horses!”

The Harbourough Mail reports that Higgins is hopeful to invoke a debate in Parliament after obtaining the required 100,000 petition signatures. “100,000 is a lot of signatures but I think once I get some momentum the story can build and it’s good to start locally,” says Higgins.

“The determination of one man who wants to change the world is inspiring,” comments China Reevers, a representative of commuter bike manufacturer Linus Bike. “Linus Bike supports the cycling community and outwardly speaks on behalf of road safety everywhere. We offer our support for Mr. Higgins’ petition and look forward to this change in legislature.”

Linus Bike is a California-based bicycle manufacturer that specializes in creating vintage style city bikes and commuter bikes. Not simply a bicycle company, Linus Bike sells a complete line of accessories for the environmentally conscious and for those who have a fondness for European style bicycles and the great tradition of European cycling.

Time:    10:30 a.m.

Location:     Cotswold Mall Harris Teeter

        112 S. Sharon Amity

        Charlotte, N.C. 28211

Live shots are welcomed!

Feb. 5, 2013, Harris Teeter Store Director Brian Reid will present two local schools each with a $ 1,000 check to support their commitment to educational programs. The organizations, receiving the donations are: Saint Gabriel Catholic School and Cotswold Elementary School. These donations are made possible by the North Carolina Education Lottery and are in addition to the dollars the schools receive from Harris Teeter through their active participation in the company’s Together in Education program.

Harris Teeter Together in Education, similar to the North Carolina Education Lottery, raises money for education initiatives to boost returns for education throughout North Carolina. The North Carolina Education Lottery provides incentive payments to retailers who sell winning jackpot tickets in the Carolina Cash 5 game. Harris Teeter has chosen to donate its incentive awards back to local schools. This most recent $ 2,000 incentive award comes from a winning Carolina Cash 5 ticket which was sold the Cotswold Mall Harris Teeter in January.

“Harris Teeter is proud to reinforce its commitment to education by donating its incentive payment to these schools,” said Danna Jones, communication specialist for Harris Teeter.

“We are always excited by this opportunity as it gives us the chance to continue to show our commitment to the community and schools by donating the money back to one of our Together in Education partners,” added Jones.

Harris Teeter rolled out lottery ticket sales in its North Carolina stores starting in fall 2010 after successful implementation at five initial locations. In addition to the funds raised for education, the new technology provided by the North Carolina Education Lottery machines led the company to move forward and make the service available to its shoppers. The machines will not accept money or dispense tickets until the buyer scans a driver’s license or state-issued identification card to verify appropriate age to purchase a lottery ticket.

Since March 2006, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $ 2.58 billion for education programs in the state. Harris Teeter received the $ 2,000 incentive payment for selling the winning ticket for the Big Winner Carolina Cash 5 drawing in January 2012. Carolina Cash 5 is played only in North Carolina, and drawings are held every night at 11:22 p.m. Tickets cost $ 1.

Motorcyclist Owes His Life to a TCA Highway Angel

Motorcyclist Owes His Life to a TCA Highway Angel

Highway Angel Mark Randall of Mesquite, Nevada

Alexandria, Virginia (PRWEB) January 25, 2013

The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) is pleased to name Mark Randall of Mesquite, Nevada, a professional driver trainer for Werner Enterprises of Omaha, Nebraska, as its latest Highway Angel. Randall is being recognized for taking preventive measures that ultimately saved a life.

On October 24, 2012, around 1:30 p.m., Randall and a student were headed westbound on I-80/680 in Omaha, Nebraska. With only two miles to go before dropping off a load, Randall was at the wheel. He stayed within the speed limit of 60 mph and made a mental note of the considerable traffic all around him.

To his right and up ahead, Randall noticed a motorcyclist who appeared to be following much too close to the car in front of him. He was also traveling about 60 mph. Randall’s safety instincts kicked in, and he began to slow down.

“I always make a big point of being aware of my surroundings when I’m operating these vehicles,” said Randall, who was recently recognized by his company for a million miles of accident-free driving and also received Werner’s Humanitarian Award for his actions that day. “I pay good attention. In fact, I was just about to make my student aware of the possible hazard ahead when the motorcyclist suddenly accelerated and attempted to pass the car. But he was just too close and hit the rear of that vehicle.”

Randall immediately began scanning the lanes for a way to get out of the path of the doomed motorcyclist. Surrounded by traffic, he knew that he could not suddenly switch lanes without putting other vehicles in danger. His only viable option was to stay put and maintain control of the tractor trailer, which was fully loaded with thousands of pounds of tires. As if in slow motion, Randall saw the motorcyclist hit the pavement hard and slide directly into his path. He immediately put on his flashers and continued to brake, finally coming to a controlled stop — within 10 feet of the man on the pavement.

The student got out to render aid, while Randall called 911. The motorcyclist had survived and was miraculously okay. Not only had Randall managed to avoid hitting the man, but he is also credited for using his truck to protect the motorcyclist from being run over by the oncoming traffic hurtling toward him at 60 mph.

At the accident scene, the responding state patrol officer made a joke, saying that the motorcyclist had been incredibly lucky that day and should probably continue that luck by purchasing some lottery tickets.

Another officer responded, “How does someone crash a motorcycle in four lanes of traffic doing 60 miles per hour and not get killed or run over?”

Feeling triumphant at what had just happened, Randall turned, pointed to his big blue truck, and said, “Because THAT truck stopped, and he was lucky to fall in front of ME!”

For helping the motorcyclist, Randall was presented with a Highway Angel lapel pin, certificate and patch. Werner Enterprises also received a certificate acknowledging that one of its drivers is a Highway Angel.

The Highway Angel program is sponsored for TCA by Internet Truckstop. Since the program’s inception in August 1997, hundreds of drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for the unusual kindness, courtesy, and courage they have shown others while on the job. TCA has received letters and e-mails from people across North America nominating truck drivers for the program.
