13 Bark Out Loud Funny Dog Terms – New Book Delivers Laughs and Trivia to Dog Lovers and Word Lovers Everywhere

“You’re My Dawg, Dog” by Donald Friedman, Illustrated by J.C. Suarès (Welcome Books)

(PRWEB) February 26, 2013

“You’re My Dawg, Dog: A Lexicon of Dog Terms for People” written by award-winning author Donald Friedman and illustrated by New York Times Op-Ed creator and designer, J.C. Suarès, one can find 146 dog terms, idioms, proverbs and metaphors explained for people, with the help of over 64 delightfully illustrated dogs. On a single page dog lovers and logophiles will find quotes from Shakespeare, Rihanna, pre-Socratic philosophers, Black Sabbath and the NASDAQ.

“You’re My Dawg, Dog” gives us enlightening etymologies and vivid examples of familiar phrases like “dog days”, “dogfight”, “dogfish”, and the “dog collar” worn by clergymen. Colorful dog terms are defined, like “black dog” which was Churchill’s nickname for his bouts of depression, “tough dog to keep on the porch”— Hillary’s descriptive for Bill, and “doggie style”, which the author drily explains is not “Vogue for Airedales and Cocker Spaniels.”

Below Donald Friedman picks 13 favorite dog terms from his book. Pick up “You’re My Dawg, Dog” for these and 133 more funny and fascinating definitions.

1. Hot dog (n) A precooked sausage, a frankfurter or wiener, usually served on a bun and de rigueur cuisine at a baseball game. From the early accusation that dog was the primary constituent of the emulsified meat that is stuffed in the casing. 2. (adj) Someone who performs daredevil stunts or shows off. “Herb, ever the hot dog at chess, loved to offer his queen in sacrifice.” Sometimes used pejoratively to describe a self-aggrandizing or non-team player. 3. An exclamation of pleasure; also “hot diggity dog” With the exception of Pat Boone and maybe Sarah Palin, last known public use was in 1958.

2. Dogfight (n) A no-holds-barred brawl. “When Herb found Josiah with his fiancée Sally at the party, it turned into a scene out of Amores Perros—the two of them on the floor, Herb biting Josiah’s ear like he was Mike Tyson.” 2. One-on-one aerial combat. Two famous dogfighting aces from World War I were Eddie Rickenbacker and Baron Manfred von Richthofen. Battles with the latter were famously parodied by Charles Schulz with the legendary Snoopy fighting from the roof of his Sopwith Camel doghouse.

3. Dog-eared (adj) Turned down or bent over, especially the corners of pages. “Sally gave Herb her copy of Ulysses and, given that he’d never seen her read anything more challenging than Cosmo, he was dumbstruck when he opened it and found it dog-eared, underlined, and filled with her marginalia.” 2. Worn out, shabby from overuse. “We’ve been listening to the same dog-eared rhetoric from the same dog-eared senator for forty years now.”

4. Black dog depression (n) The phrase seems to conjoin a dark mood with being dogged or unshakably followed. Commonly associated with Winston Churchill, who often referred to the depressive side of his bipolar disorder as his “black dog.” The usage has been around for centuries: in the Middle Ages, melancholia was one of the less positive traits the dog represented. “When Sally told Josiah she couldn’t face the day, that she’d gotten up with a black dog in her bed, he asked whether it was better or worse than his daily awakening with an elephant’s foot on his chest.”

5. Horn dog (n) Someone who thinks about sex all the time and may, as a consequence, become a “tough dog to keep on the porch.”

6. Dog collar (n) A stiff upright collar, especially the reverse collar worn by a clergyman. “Herb could not come to grips with his unfrocking, and for a year afterward continued to wear his dog collar and bask in the deference it inspired in the people he met.”

7. Big dog (n) The boss, an important personage, or the most competitive in a field. 2. The constellation Canis Major. 3. The Boston Dynamics Big Dog robot, which looks and sounds like a giant mutated insect, can carry several hundred pounds for hours over any kind of terrain without losing its balance even when violently kicked from the side or traversing black ice, and without complaint. See it on YouTube.

8. Dog days (n) For the Greeks, the rising of Sirius, the dog star, signaled the start of the hot and weakening days of summer, which became known as the dog days. The Greeks offered sacrifices to Sirius to cajole cool breezes. The Romans called the wiltingly hot days “dies caniculares.” The French call the scorching August weather “la canicule.” This idea—as well as “every dog has its day”—is alluded to in the title of the Sidney Lumet film Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino. “Dog days” has also found new meaning among stock traders who’ve found August slow for stocks as well as people.

9. Tail wagging the dog A situation in which a minor item comes to dominate the major, or in which attention is fixed on incidental problems to the detriment of more central ones. If the intention is to divert attention from important matters to unimportant ones, the method is to “wag the dog.” In the 1997 Barry Levinson film of that name, the electorate is distracted from a White House sex scandal by creating a fictive war. S.J. Perelman once wrote humorously of his escape from the attention of some prostitutes: “It was a case of the tail dogging the wag.”

10. Underdog (n) The person, group, or entity expected to lose a competition or a political race. Election night, 1948, Truman was so much the underdog that the Chicago Tribune confidently headlined Dewey as victor even before the results were in.

11. Love me, love my dog A metaphoric way of saying that a person must be accepted along with those people and things close to or attached to her; by extension, to be accepted with one’s foibles and weaknesses. Back in the 12th century, St. Bernard (appropriately enough) is claimed to have quoted the proverb in Latin: “Qui me amat, amet et canem meum” (literally, “Who loves me, loves my dog, as well”), although why he did that is unclear. “Sally’s friends were disgusted with Herb’s drunkenness and discouraged Sally from bringing him around, until she called them on it and declared, ‘Love me, love my dog.’”

12. Three-dog night (n) A cold night—i.e., one requiring three dogs to keep you warm. Also the American rock group that sang of their friend Jeremiah the bullfrog and wished joy to the world.

13. Lucky dog (n) A very fortunate person, sometimes used to imply undeservedly so. “Herb, that lucky dog, won the lottery the same week his company Amalgamated. •

Celebrity Chef Geoffrey Zakarian to Open New Restaurant on Board Miami-Based Norwegian Getaway

Celebrity Chef Geoffrey Zakarian to Open New Restaurant on Board Miami-Based Norwegian Getaway

Geoffrey Zakarian and Kevin Sheehan, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line

Miami, FL (PRWEB) February 25, 2013

Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that celebrity chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian will create and oversee the opening of his seafood restaurant, Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, on the line’s newest ship, Norwegian Getaway, which will sail year-round to the Eastern Caribbean from Miami beginning February 2014. To celebrate this exciting announcement, Norwegian partnered with Zakarian for an exclusive lunch on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Soho Beach House in South Beach, during Miami’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival, further signifying Norwegian Getaway’s strong ties to her Miami home. Geoffrey Zakarian’s new restaurant is located in the ship’s hub amongst three expansive, action-packed decks called 678 Ocean Place and includes innovative outdoor spaces along The Waterfront, the ship’s oceanfront promenade, offering guests an unparalleled experience with a unique connection to the ocean.

The restaurant, Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, will bring a luxury seafood dining experience to Norwegian Getaway, utilizing all of the ingredients and techniques that Zakarian employs in his land-based establishments to three distinct dining locations on board: Ocean Blue, Ocean Blue on The Waterfront, Zakarian’s take on a boardwalk clam shack, and The Raw Bar, serving crustaceans and wines by the glass. In developing the Ocean Blue concept for Norwegian’s newest ship, Zakarian is orchestrating every aspect of the restaurants, from the menus to the uniforms and the glassware. On select sailings, Zakarian will also host meet-and-greets with Norwegian Getaway guests, along with in-person cooking demonstrations and intimate cooking experiences for smaller groups. The first location of Ocean Blue will premiere on board Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway’s New York City-based sister ship in April 2013.

“I am thrilled to announce that the Ocean Blue concept we developed for Norwegian Breakaway will also have a home on her Miami-based sister ship, Norwegian Getaway,” said Geoffrey Zakarian. “I am so proud of the concept, menus and décor of this restaurant and am excited to bring my sense of hospitality to guests cruising to the Eastern Caribbean from Miami on Norwegian Getaway.”

Zakarian’s taste, style and passion for fine cuisine have defined his career, which has spanned more than 25 years. An accomplished chef who has presided over some of the country’s top kitchens, he currently has two popular restaurants in New York City – The Lambs Club and The National; one in Atlantic City – The Water Club at Borgata; and a highly acclaimed cookbook “Geoffrey Zakarian’s Town/Country: 150 Recipes for Life Around the Table.” Zakarian emerged victorious in the recent fourth season of Food Network’s The Next Iron Chef, Super Chefs. He appears regularly on Iron Chef America, demonstrating a razor-sharp knowledge of culinary techniques in this fast-paced cooking competition. When he’s not battling in the kitchen stadium, Zakarian stays busy filming CHOPPED, where he is featured as a recurring judge and highlights his favorite dishes on The Best Thing I Ever Ate.

“Geoffrey is a world-renowned chef with an incredible culinary resume and an overall great guy,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “Our guests sailing from Miami on Norwegian Getaway will experience his world-class cuisine in three unique dining outlets. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Geoffrey and that he is bringing his culinary expertise, creativity and attention to detail to another one of our beautiful ships.”

Ocean Blue, the Raw Bar and Ocean Blue on the Waterfront are just three of the incredible dining options that will be found amongst three expansive, flowing decks of dining, bars, entertainment, gaming and more as part of The Waterfront, the ship’s oceanfront boardwalk, and 678 Ocean Place, the central hub of the ship. These two areas, lined with shops, restaurants and bars, represent a major innovation in ship design, offering guests an unparalleled experience with a unique connection to the ocean.

Located on Deck 8, The Waterfront is a revolutionary outdoor experience that adds a whole new dimension to the line’s signature Freestyle Cruising, by offering a number of seaside venues that feature breathtaking views and a sense of connection with the ocean. The hub of the ship is 678 Ocean Place, a space that uniquely flows, intertwines and connects three decks of daytime and nighttime amusements. There will be a total of 17* dining venues combined on both 678 Ocean Place and The Waterfront, along with 12* bars and lounges, including Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian.

The Waterfront will feature eight outdoor dining and lounging options, including signature Norwegian favorites like Moderno Churrascaria; Cagney’s Steakhouse; La Cucina; Shaker’s Cocktail Bar; Malting’s Beer & Whiskey Bar; and the newest addition, Ocean Blue on The Waterfront, with outdoor seating and a special takeaway menu. The Waterfront will also feature a gelato bar serving a selection of flavors of the delectable frozen treat. Guests will enjoy this creamy confection as they take a leisurely stroll along The Waterfront. A yet-to-be-announced entertainment venue will also have an outdoor space.

678 Ocean Place

On Deck 8, 678 Ocean Place connects the excitement of The Waterfront outdoor spaces with interior dining venues for Moderno; Cagney’s; Shaker’s; La Cucina; Malting’s and Ocean Blue.

La Cucina celebrates the Tuscan countryside and will continue to serve Norwegian’s delicious Italian dishes to guests who choose dine either al fresco on the outdoor patio on The Waterfront, in the main restaurant or the interior terrace option, giving guests the opportunity to dine along the interior walkway beneath twinkling lanterns, exposed wooden beams and greenery.

Moderno Churrascaria is Norwegian’s signature Brazilian-style steakhouse. Whether guests dine indoors or out, they will feast from a huge salad bar, followed by a variety of grilled and slow-roasted meats that are carved tableside by passadors. Norwegian’s signature establishment Cagney’s Steakhouse will feature succulent grilled steaks, perfectly cooked double cut lamb chops and other steakhouse favorites. Guests will dine in style amidst warm wood tones as they enjoy watching the chefs prepare their meals in the open kitchen. Located between Cagney’s and Moderno, Prime Meridian will offer guests the opportunity to order a signature cocktail and soak in the action taking place around them on 678 Ocean Place. Guests will also find retail outlets, the photo gallery, and a Cigar Lounge on Deck 8. A three-story open atrium with an exquisite LED chandelier with light changing effects will serve as the centerpiece of 678 Ocean Place with openings to all three decks and glass staircases connecting the levels.

Spanning more than 18,000 square feet on Deck 7, the contemporary Getaway Casino will have a stylish sophistication created by the use of rich materials, luxurious ornamental lighting and highly decorative artwork including gold tiles and upscale finishes. Getaway Casino will offer guests the opportunity to try their luck on 310 of the latest slot machines; along with 26 gaming tables featuring poker, black jack, roulette and craps. With the most rewarding Casinos At Sea Players Club program, there will be something for everyone, from the novice to the high roller. Bar 21, located adjacent to the Casino, is a stunning, intimate bar featuring video poker and multiple plasma television screens.

Due to the popularity of the noodle bar on Norwegian Epic and soon on Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway will feature Shanghai’s Noodle Bar, the largest noodle bar at sea. This exciting dining concept will offer all counter seating around an open kitchen and will serve traditional Chinese noodles, wok-fried dishes and dim sum.

Another guest favorite, O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, returns on Norwegian Getaway. This 24-hour a day neighborhood sports bar and restaurant will serve classic American favorites and comfort food. It will feature a giant two-story screen, perfect for watching sports and movies, along with miniature bowling, pool and air hockey tables and interactive games.

A popular hotspot on several Norwegian ships, Bliss Ultra Lounge has been re-designed on Norwegian Getaway to resemble a true hotspot. Guests will feel the excitement as they walk through the LED-lit tunnel entrance to the illuminated bar, LED walls and pulsating dance floor where they will dance the night away.

Savor, one of the three complimentary main dining options on Norwegian Getaway, will feature cuisine that is traditional with a contemporary flair. Across from Savor, is where guests will find Taste, another complimentary main dining venue. Taste will serve a variety of culinary delights to please every palate. Both restaurants feature clean lines and upscale, contemporary décor. Located between Savor and Taste is Mixx Bar, the perfect, pre- or post-dinner gathering place, with a modern twist to a classical design.

Norwegian’s signature Teppanyaki restaurant will continue to dazzle guests on Norwegian Getaway complete with a traditional Japanese rock garden, featuring bamboo plants and bonsai trees to promote a pleasing aesthetic ambiance. With 96 seats surrounding 12 flat top grills, Teppanyaki chefs will showcase their knife-wielding skills while cooking exhibition-style Japanese cuisine. Guests will be amazed by the masterful chefs while they enjoy an appetizing meal. Guests can also enjoy a variety of a la carte sushi and Japanese dishes at Wasabi Sushi Bar.

Le Bistro, Norwegian’s signature French restaurant, will feature an elegant indoor setting, along with a European sidewalk-style dining opportunity which will overlook the social hub of the ship, 678 Ocean Place. Guests will marvel at the three-story cascading LED chandelier above them, along with the constant flow of people as they dine on classic French favorites.

Within the Atrium, located on Deck 6, guests will find a two-story video wall along with the Café and Bar at The Atrium. The Café will offer specialty coffees and fresh baked treats. The Bar at The Atrium will feature mixed drinks, along with a self-service wine bar. The Shore Excursion Desk, Internet Café and Art Gallery will be located in close proximity to the Atrium, along with two meeting rooms, card room and library.

Currently being built at Meyer Werft in Germany, Norwegian Getaway will be 146,600 gross tons and offer a wide range of accommodations. The ship represents an opportunity for the Norwegian guest to “get away” from the routine of work, school, and daily stress, and find a true respite at sea that reflects the energy and culture that Miami is known for worldwide.

The ship will also feature a rich mix of stateroom options, including The Haven by Norwegian, comprised of 42 Suites at the top of the ship in an exclusive, private key-card enclave and 22 additional Suites located throughout the ship; the innovative Studios, designed and priced for solo travelers; a wide range of Oceanview staterooms, Balcony and Mini-Suites; along with Spa Balcony, Mini-Suites and Suites in close proximity to the spa. Norwegian Getaway’s sister ship, Norwegian Breakaway, will begin sailing from her year-round home port of New York City in May 2013.

Norwegian Getaway will sail seven-day cruises from Miami to the Eastern Caribbean beginning on February 1, 2014, with ports of call including Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Nassau, Bahamas. Top Echelon?s ?Pinnacle? Newsletter Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary!

Top Echelon’s ‘Pinnacle’ Newsletter Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary!

“The Pinnacle,” the official newsletter of Top Echelon Network, is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

Canton, Ohio (PRWEB) March 05, 2013

Top Echelon Network, an elite network of highly specialized executive search firms, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In fact, the official newsletter of Top Echelon Network, called “The Pinnacle,” is celebrating its anniversary today—Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

The first “Pinnacle” newsletter was sent to Preferred Member recruiters on March 5, 1988. At that time, Top Echelon Network was known as Nationwide Interchange Service (NIS). “The Pinnacle” was sent on that date through regular snail mail by NIS founder Mike Kappel. (NIS changed its name to Top Echelon Network in 1998.)

“The Pinnacle” newsletter is distributed once a week to Top Echelon Network recruiters. It’s filled with news and information relating not only to the Network, but also to recruiting in general. The Network provides its Members with pertinent statistics; split placement information; success stories; and announcements regarding Network tools, services, and upcoming events.

“The Pinnacle” was originally sent in a hardcopy format. Eventually, it was delivered electronically via email as a PDF document. Three years ago, the newsletter underwent a third change when it was compiled in a blog on the Top Echelon website and once again delivered electronically.

In this latest iteration, Network recruiters receive an email each week containing a link. The recruiters click on that link to view all of the articles in that week’s issue of the newsletter.

Since “The Pinnacle” has been published every week for the past 25 years, that means this week’s issue of the newsletter—scheduled for publication on Wednesday, March 6—will be the 1,300th “Pinnacle” to be produced.

According to Top Echelon Network President Mark Demaree, the “The Pinnacle” newsletter is synonymous with Top Echelon Network and the service that the Network has provided to executive search firms for the past 25 years.

“Our newsletter is more than just a newsletter to our Preferred Member recruiters,” said Demaree. “It’s a celebration of their accomplishments and an acknowledgement of their achievements. We’re only successful when our Members are successful, and that’s why we strive to recognize their success in ‘The Pinnacle.’ We announce the split placements they make, as well as the awards they earn as a result of their performance on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis.”

Top Echelon Network was founded in 1988 in Canton, Ohio. Nearly 400 recruiting firms from all major industries are Preferred Member recruiters in Top Echelon Network.

Roach Energy Gives Generous Donation to Non-Profit Organization

Roach Energy Gives Generous Donation to Non-Profit Organization

Martinsburg, WV (PRWEB) February 24, 2013

Roach Energy recently signed on to Hospice of the Panhandle’s ‘Building the Dream’ campaign, offering a $ 5,000 gift to the agency in the non-profit’s quest to build a 14-bed inpatient unit and to consolidate offices.

The gift follows one made by Rocs employees in 2010, who donated more than $ 3,300 to the campaign as a result of selling the winning Powerball ticket to former Berkeley County Magistrate and Sheriff Randy Smith. When a store sells a winning lottery ticket, it receives a percentage of proceeds from the West Virginia Lottery Commission. In this instance, Roach Energy’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Roach, gave employees the opportunity to make a gift to the charity of their choice.

“Roach Energy has always been committed to supporting the community,” Roach said. “We have witnessed the hard work that many non-profits perform on a daily basis. Our community would not exist without them. Roach Energy’s desire to give back goes back generations – it’s just something we have always done and will continue to do.”

West Virginia’s top energy supplier, Roach Energy, supports many non-profits in the community in addition to Hospice – the Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic, Shenandoah Area Council of Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Club and the Rotary Foundation, to name a few. The company recently was the lead sponsor in the noontime Rotary Club’s fundraiser, “Taste of the Panhandle,” which supports several non-profits in the area.

“Roach Energy really sets the standard as a business which has always been willing to give back,” said Hospice Board chair and campaign chair GT Schramm. “We were so pleased with their gift and support. The fact that they immediately thought of giving away the store’s lottery proceeds – and asking employees to choose their favorite charity – just speaks volumes to how they feel about the non-profit community.”

More than 350 individuals and area businesses have made donations to Hospice’s Building the Dream campaign. To date, more than $ 3.5 million has been raised. Construction at the 19-acre site, situated on the Berkeley-Jefferson County border, continues. Roadwork and excavation is completed and building contractors are expected to get on the scene in early February.

Hospice staff expects to occupy the new facilities during the first quarter of 2014.

“We at Hospice applaud that Roach Energy is willing to help so many do so much good,” said CEO Margaret Cogswell.

For more information, contact Roach Energy marketing and promotions manager Bethany Allen-Perez at (304) 262-5067.

About Roach Energy:

Since 1952 Roach Energy has been providing local, reliable and affordable heating solutions. Roach Energy is one of the fastest-growing suppliers of energy products and services in the Eastern Panhandle with over 4,500 customers. Eldot Makes Personal Appearance March 9 at Tucson Festival of Books

Eldot Makes Personal Appearance March 9 at Tucson Festival of Books

Portland, OR (PRWEB) February 21, 2013

In cooperation with Xlibris Publishing, Diphra Enterprises is pleased to present Eldot in person for the first time. He will meet the public and sign complimentary copies of Barr’s Meadow, the first book in the Julian’s Private Scrapbook series.

“… how in the **** can you maintain anonymity at a book signing… wear pince-nez and a crêpe mustache?” one colleague asked. What Eldot will wear and whether he will reveal the name behind the pen name will be known only to those who pick up their signed copy at the Festival.

“Anonymity is not my goal,” says the author. “My hope is to deflect unexpected questions from hitting family and friends; the pioneering and controversial coming of age series of books could be upsetting to some.”

Eldot will be signing at Author Solutions booths 201-6 on Sunday, March 9 between 2 and 3 p.m.

The Tucson Festival of Books is March 7-9 on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Ariz. A literary oasis for book lovers and authors alike, the annual event welcomes authors representing a wide variety of genres including fiction, nonfiction, children’s fiction, cooking, and poetry. More than 100,000 readers are expected to browse through 522 exhibit booths.

For such a large event, the location is relatively compact; it’s on the Mall along East University Boulevard, stretching from the Old Main area to just east of Cherry Avenue, and to a few nearby buildings.

The University will be on spring break, so Festival participants and spectators won’t be competing with students for parking. Public parking is available free in the University’s surface lots and in six garages: Cherry Avenue, Highland Avenue, Main Gate, Park Avenue, Sixth Street and Tyndall Avenue. (The Second Street Parking Garage is reserved.)

Free public wi-fi is available on the campus, along with a full food court and varied snack vendors.

About the Julian’s Private Scrapbook Series:

The two week summer camp of 1962 is the setting. The story is divided into five parts, each written as if a stand alone. However, for a full and complete reading experience, they are meant to be read in sequence.

Barr’s Meadow, Part 1: 281 pages, Published January, 2012

The Poker Club, Part 2: 300 pages, Published June, 2012

The Shooting Gallery, Part 3: 307 pages, Published August, 2012

Thunder and Lightning, Part 4: 322 pages, Published January, 2013

The Champions, Part 5: 392 pages, Published March, 2013

These books appeared simultaneously in eBook editions at Diphra.com and Smashwords.com in 2011-2012

Available at Xlibris and all retail bookstores.
