AAE (Aluminum Athletic Equipment Co.), official supplier to The Penn Relays for over 50 years, will have its new NCAA Recommended Height Hammer Discus Cage unveiled at the 118th edition of the Penn Relay Carnival. Erected at the newly constructed Rivers Field on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus, this throwing cage features main nets and swivel gates that exceed the recommended height by the 2010-2011 NCAA Rules Committee. This recommended height model is specifically designed for elite throwing programs challenged by amplified safety concerns due to proximity to roadways, waterways, spectators and/or other fields.

“With the completion of the new Hammer-Discus Cage, the throwing program at Penn, as well as the Penn Relays, can boast to having a World Class Facility for the long throws,” stated Tony Tenisci, Assistant Women’s Track Coach at the University of Pennsylvania. “It has been a dream of mine that the throwers have a ‘Destination Throwing Area’ where they can compete in any type of weather and know that the facility will give them the very best opportunity to throw far…..with this new AAE Throwing Cage and landing field completed, this dream has finally come true,” added Tenisci.

AAE’s NCAA Recommended Height Hammer Discus Cages (CHDC-RH/IHDC-RH models) are available in both college or international models featuring 8 or 10 posts respectively and main nets that are 30′-0″ in height with 33′ high swivel gates – both which exceed the 2010-2011 NCAA Rules Committee recommended minimum height of 8 meters (26′-3″). The surrounding main net (accommodates two offset throws circles, hammer and discus) is 30′ high x 85′, double ply 2-1/2″sq. HTTP knotless net, suspended by 6″diameter heavy-wall 3′ offset aluminum posts. Additional features include: 1) 33′ high x 14′-6″ wide rotating gates constructed of a 6″diameter reinforced post with 4″sq. heavy-wall welded aluminum frame and encased with double ply 2-1/2″sq. HTTP knotless net; 2) a 3/8″ thick (10mm) rubber facing is applied to our frame, which prolongs gate life by absorbing implement impact; 3) our Net Integration System uses tensioned vertical cable on each gate post to attach/integrate main net to gate net, further secured by stainless steel cable collars – creating a seamless “Uni-Net”; 4) an 8′ high x 95′ surrounding back-up net, double ply 2-1/2″sq. HTTP knotless net that is recommended as a “safety buffer” for coaches and athletes; and 5) our Net Retractor System uses a horizontal cable positioned 7′ off ground level with stainless steel collar and lanyard tie-backs on every offset post, which keeps main net from interfering with the hammer throw implements.
