Horse Racing 101

Article by Harvey Russell

Equestrian sport is one of the oldest recreations available for mankind. For the past thousands of years up to the 19th century, the game is mainly reserved for the royalty. Maintaining a horse is expensive and only landed and aristocrats have the resources to do it. Horse racing therefore became mainly a “sport for kings”. As the masses cannot join the races directly, they began to involve themselves by betting. Today, the sport is also one of the biggest gambling sports in the world. Let us look at look at some aspects of this popular sport.

The Tracks

There are few types or racetracks depending on the type of horse racing.  Each country in the world has a specific type of horse racing so the surfaces of each course are not changed, usually. Thoroughbred racing are conducted on flat tracks filled with artificial grass or turf while Harness racing are on flat surfaces with sand and plain dirt.

Depending on the conditions, the length of the tracks usually ranges from five furlongs to over a mile and a half.

Types of Races

Horse racing types varies in nearly every country, although majority of the rules are the same. Races organized in different countries have different names but with minor changes in the universal rules of the original sport. The most popular examples of the names of such races are Thoroughbred racing, Harness racing, Quarter horse racing and so on. Thoroughbred racing is the most popular type of race though. In the US and some parts of Asia, Harness horse racing have many followers while Quarter horse racing can be seen mostly in Europe and Britain.

The Horses

Most of the time, racers and horse owners are given the freedom to choose their own horse for the races. During training, each horse is trained for a specific distance to run, which means that a horse in the stable are “specialists” for a certain race and distance. These horses are bred and trained according to what course they are designed to run. In general, racing horses should meet the minimum criteria for being a pure breed. Hence, it is important that the mother and father (sire and dam) must be of the same breed and must meet the standards for racing horses. Horses who are no longer fit for racing due to old age or injuries are still maintained for reproduction purposes.

Betting and Gambling

Horse race betting and gambling has been around for centuries now. Aristocrats and commoners alike found betting on horse races a very good pastime. Today, businessmen, rich folks, and even poor people still find horse race betting a good recreation due to large amount of amount of money involved while at the same time giving a good source of excitement. In Australia for example, hundreds of thousands of viewers were tuned in to their TV sets when Phar Lap entered a race. Its races are some of the hottest Australia news of its time. The same story is repeated all over the world, especially if a certain horse captures the attention of the majority.

Horse Race Form

Article by Kaye MCArdle

A horse race form is a program containing factors about a horse race. It generally lists the scheduled races, the names of the horses, and other important race information. A horse race card helps bettors make an educated betting choice. The following text gives an overview to the terms and lingo in horse racing and betting. ‘Time’ is the race’s starting time.

The ‘purse’ is the prize money that is split mainly between the owner, trainer and jockey. Prize money is also spread, on a sliding scale, to those finishing in the first few places.Flat races are usually run at distances from 5 to 12 furlongs. A furlong is one eighth of a mile or 0.2 km.The ‘Program Number’ is the race number.

‘Morning Line Odds’ are the horse’s odds at the start of the day. This changes as the day progresses and more bets are placed.’Saddle Cloth’ Colour is included to help spectators and bettors identify their horses from a distance.’Post Position’ is the position assigned to the horse in the starting gate.Owners often use a name that stands out and is easily recalled by bettors, called a ‘Horse Name’ This is done since the horse’s name is often used by many newcomer bettors to help choose their bet.The main horse colours are bay, chestnut, black, brown, white, grey, pinto, buckskin, dun, and roan.Sex- Contains an abbreviation of the horse’s sex.? c – colt? f- filly? h -thoroughbred aged 5 or older? geldingRegarding a horse’s age, January 1 is counted as their birth date. Different horses mature at different ages. Most horses reach mental maturity at around seven or eight years old, when their behaviour generally becomes calmer and more accepting. The Sire and Dam are the names of the horse’s parents. The dam’s sire is often included. This data is useful for bettors to ascertain possible horse performance through ancestry. The Breeder is the person who handled the horse’s upbringing.Regarding weight, the amount of weight, including the jockey, which the horse will carry, is listed. Many jockeys are on strict diets so they can ‘make the weight’ for their rides. The Claiming Price is the price at which the horse is available for sale to a qualified buyer. As not all horses are competitors in stakes level races, racing in the claiming ranks gives the opportunity to race against horses of similar calibre. Thus, for example, when a horse easily wins against ?5,000 claimers, he may be moved up in value to avoid his being claimed. More prominent tracks would generally feature horses of higher value. Claiming Prices vary from ?5,000 to ?150,000 depending on the track. The ‘trainer’ is responsible for getting the horse in perfect shape for race day.The ‘owner’ pays for a horse’s training, and is keen to receive a return on his investments. The ‘jockey/rider’ has a massive part to play in a race. His ability to guide the horse in the race often spells the difference between winning and losing. The rider’s silks differentiate one mount from another, and are crucial to bettors who want to distinguish which horse they have backed. The variations can include spots, hoops, stars and stripes. A more recent innovation is the use of a sponsors’ logo. The ‘summary of results’ section includes a breakdown of the horse’s racing results during the current year, during his lifetime, under wet track conditions, on the same distance and on the same track. It also lists the horse’s previous earnings. It also contains the horse class rating which is a mark that is based on the horse’s speed in previous races, with emphasis placed on recent performance and races run at today’s distance. It’s usually a number between 50.0 and 100.0.

Irish egyptian horse race turns to chaos at police intervention

These pikeys were racing horses on the highway in Ireland. The Garda intervened and only managed to arrest one racer. At one point head on collisions were narrowly avoided when the pikeys watching the race bunched up around one racer to protect him from the police. The horses were called “Russian lady” and “Christies filly”. I’m not sure which one is which. Never trust a gypsy. .

Fathers Day Gift Ideas: Take Dad to a Concert, Ball Game or Theater Event without Breaking the Bank

Fathers Day Gift Ideas: Take Dad to a Concert, Ball Game or Theater Event without Breaking the Bank

Cheap Concert Tickets

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 09, 2012

Father’s Day Gift Ideas:

Cheap Concert Tickets has many suggestions of great gifts for Dad on his special day. Try some suggestions below to score big with dad. All dads love to attend sports, concerts and theatre events with their families.

If Dad is a football fan, surprise him with tickets for his favorite team. Pre-season games often feature great opponent match-ups and they are always considerably cheaper to attend than a regular season game. The NFL football season begins in August and goes on through early February ending with the Super Bowl. Many Dads may prefer to go to a football game at the college they attended. Usually each college will have a rival that they play each year (for example: Army vs. Navy) and this game may be the perfect pick for Dad. The best selection of football tickets is in the summer because once football season starts the pickings are usually quite slim with the good seats often being sold out already.

If Dad is an avid golfer, get him tickets for a pro golf tournament. To save money on golf tickets, get tickets for one of the practice rounds on a weekday because all the famous golfers like Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson are still visible at a much reduced price. Some of the upcoming pro golf tournaments include: US Open, AT&T National, US Senior Open and the Bridgestone Invitational.

Most dads love Professional Wrestling and there are many WWE events throughout the year to choose from. There are also Mixed Martial Arts events that regularly tour North America. Seats that are higher up in the stands for wrestling events are generally cheaper than ringside seats. Another way to save money on WWE Tickets is to check the inventory often for an event to see if the tickets get reduced at the last minute.

For the Dad who is a baseball fanatic, blow him away with baseball tickets to an upcoming MLB game. Baseball games during the week that are played in the afternoon are quite cheap to attend. Many communites also have Minor League Teams who play in neat stadiums and tickets for these games are a fraction of the price of Major League Baseball tix. Dad will enjoy attending any ball game with family and remember its the thought that counts.

Gift ideas for Dads who are tennis lovers include tickets to a local tennis tournament. Some upcoming Tennis Tournaments include: Cincinnati Tennis Masters ATP Pro Open, Citi Open Tennis Tournament, Masters Tennis and the US Open Tennis Championship. Tickets for some of the major tennis tournaments can get expensive so check out inventory on the practice rounds in the week preceding the tournament.

If Dad loves theater, there are many phenomenal musicals to choose from. Current musicals performing nationwide include Wicked, Billy Elliot and the Book of Mormon. To save money on tickets, look for dates in the middle of the run of a particular musical. For example if Wicked opens in Indianapolis on May 1st and goes until May 31st – try to find tickets for dates like May 14, 15 and 16 because as a rule these are considerably cheaper than tickets at the beginning or the end of their tour schedule. Also, it pays off big time to find seats for matinees during the week on musicals.

Last but not least, all Dads love to go to concerts and some choices include Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw Brothers of the Sun Tour, Jason Aldean and many more. There are many deals out there on concert tickets and tickets are often below face value on the day of a concert because brokers need to get rid of them. Most of the time event tickets can be sent via email and printed out at home right up to show time. This is a great way to get to see A List Performers at low prices – plan ahead and map out a strategy. Don’t forget to look for promo codes for different events because additional savings are reaped from savings codes.

For additional savings on any Father’s Day ticket purchase, use code DAD at the checkout. All event tickets are guaranteed authentic and seating will be together unless mentioned otherwise in listing.

Elma, New York (PRWEB) June 02, 2012

The Made In America Store stocks their toy department with a wide range of Poof-Slinky products ranging from two different kinds of Slinkys, Poof Soccer Balls, Poof Footballs and Spinwheels.

Consumers can choose from the Original Slinky or a vintage looking, 1945 Collector’s Slinky. The Collector’s Slinky is packaging in a vintage box that is supposed to resemble the packaging used when the Slinkys were presented in the 1940’s. Also, the vintage Slinky is also the darker steel color, as opposed to the shiny, stainless steel color it is today.

Poof-Slinky also has a display of footballs and soccer balls in a range of sizes, styles, and colors. Poof is widely known as being a soft, foam-like material that holds its shape, making it the perfect safe-sport ball! Poof footballs range in size from mini to normal and even come in a ‘Spiral’ shape. The soccer balls from Poof-Slinky range from mini to normal size.

Lastly, Poof-Slinky manufactures US made Spinwheels. The Spinwheels from Poof-Slinky come in three different styles; Solid Colors, Animal Print or Star & Stripes. These Spinwheels have used for decorating lawn and gardens, toys for children and has been said to help keep certain critters from crops.

One of the most famous toys in history, Slinky, originated in a meter for testing horsepower on battleships. As World War II raged on in 1943, marine engineer Richard James worked at his desk in Philadelphia’s Cramp Shipyard. A harmless mishap forever changed the life of James and his wife Betty and sowed the seed that produced the iconic Slinky.

A torsion spring used in a testing meter fell off James’ desk and tumbled end over end across the floor. James took it home to Betty that evening and said, “I think I can make a toy out of this.” The Slinky was made by coming up with a precise structure with the metal.

Betty thumbed through the dictionary for a fitting name for the toy and found it in Slinky, which was defined as “stealthy, sleek and sinuous”. In 1945, Richard and Betty used a $ 500 loan to pay a company for manufacturing a small quantity of Slinks and an attempt was made to sell it through retail outlets in Philadelphia.

Consumers can purchase a 1945 Collector’s Slinky by visiting http://www.MadeInAmericaStore.com or call 716-652-4872 and talk to a Made In America Store representative.

However, with no name recognition, the spring didn’t sell. As Christmas neared, Gimbels Department Store agreed to provide counter space for 400 Slinkys and Richard James went down ahead of Betty to demonstrate the toy. When Betty arrived at Gimbels, she spotted a mob of people with dollars in their hands, and they were gathered around the Slinky® display. Within 90 minutes all 400 Slinkys were sold, and the rest is toy history.

A factory was established in Philadelphia and Richard quit his job at the shipyard to devote full time to the Slinky, which was the hit of the 1946 American Toy Fair in New York City. During the 1950′s business boomed, but Richard James’ life took a course that led to his going to South America in 1960.

Left with the responsibility of six children and now a floundering business, Betty James began a rebirth of the Slinky dream by relocating the factory to her hometown of Hollidaysburg, a small town adjacent to Altoona. By 1960, Betty had a unique co-op advertising plan in full swing, aided by the production of a “jingle” that is still the sound behind Slinky television commercials.

Slinky sales continued to increase through the years and a number of new items were added to the James Industries line of toys. In 1990, a national survey by a publication revealed that 89.8 percent of the people in America knew what a Slinky was or were familiar with the jingle.

Purchased in 1998 by Poof Products, a leading American toy company, Slinky is firmly entrenched as one of the leading staples of the toy industry and is one of America’s most recognized brand names.

Other milestones include; The Discovery and History Channels selected Slinky as one of the top 10 toys of the 20th Century, the U.S. Postal Service honored Slinky on a 1999 commemorative stamp, Slinky participated on a NASA space mission, over 300 million Slinkys have been sold.

General Sherman

Article by Tammy Sons

General Sherman

Ever wondered what the largest living thing is? Well we have the answer. The General Sherman. The General Sherman takes the name of a Giant Sequoia. This towering tree reaches a height of 275 feet. During a 2002 research of the tree, the volume of the tree’s trunk measured 1487 cubic meters. This giant sequoia is located in the Giant Forest, inside Sequoia National Park. The forest, as well as the park, get their names from their giant sequoia trees. This famous park is located in California. You won’t find these kinds of trees at any nursery online.

As usual, it takes trees quite a few years to reach maturity. The General Sherman is thought to be 2,300 to 2,700 years old. Think your local tree nursery has trees that old? I do not think so.

The General Sherman was named in 1879 by naturalist James Wolverton. He named the tree after American Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman. Mr. Wolverton served as a lieutenant in the 9th Indiana Calvary under Sherman. After close comparison with the General Grant, the General Sherman was named the largest tree in 1931. The largest tree is measured by the wood trunk volume. Perennials are an interesting part of nature to observe.

As said before the General Sherman of trees of its kind can not be purchased at a plant nursery. If you are looking for any kind of tree for landscaping you will want to go with a “not so famous” species of plants. Tree nurseries can be found anywhere online.
